Two Sides of the Poppy
Lovely here in Clevedon
Yet in Afghanistan
Their fields are swiftly cut down
By word of Taliban
How sad this bloom of beauty
Conceals a hidden side
The good combined with evil
Like Jekyll with his Hyde
Their seeds help ease Man's suffering
With codeine and morphine
But also bring us heroin
A substance so obscene
Its craving leads to misery
And fuels increase in crime
It blights the lives of many
A scourge upon our time
Yet still I love the colour
Of meadows all aflame
Without the joy of poppies
No year would be the same.
